Map Rugby thrashes LKC

The Maru-a-Pula Senior Boys Rugby team started their season off on a high by beating LKC 15-9. It was the first time in Botswana schools rugby history that the two played each other in a group match, which made the game a spectacle. Earlier this year the team came second in the Jwaneng rugby tournament, hence making them the number one ranked team in Botswana. LKC scored two quick penalties in the first half to give them a lead going into half time. In spite of this, the boys regrouped at half-time, and scored 15 straight points to win the game by a close margin. When interviewed, Prop Collins Churchill responded by saying, “We played as a team in the second half, and the fact that we only had two practices prior to the match is astonishing”. The win sent a message throughout the league that MAP is a force to be reckoned with.

Inter House Soccer

Friday the 28th May 2010, saw the M-a-p inter house soccer teams take center stage to compete in a one day tournament that was later to be known as the "war of the houses." After a day long of kicking and screaming, house L won the lower school challenge while house M won the open challenge. The most outstanding feature This tournament was that it was contested by both girls and boys in the same teams. Now,that may spark up a few arguments about whether girls are fit to play with boys and all the gender related issues but, that's another topic to chew;'food for though they call it.'This oturnament was definitely not the last to be held on the soccer filed because next term Mr Laverick will be organizing the seven aside boys tournament which will be graced by schools such as ISSA and Legae.Considering the case of the "second shibobo league" rumored to be organized by Boasa Roberts,MAP sports archive is yet to confirm the potential event.Keep logged on for the latest news!

Excessive Sadness?

The M-A-P juniors have been done enough damage by their BISA rivals. Although this might come across as harsh but, one gets to wonder whether the fliers they put about excessive sadness and other symptoms of losing were directed to them! Well make no mistake, Coach Clarence is doing a good job with these boys and maybe it’s just a matter of time before they get their plaudits! Keep holding on boys, football needs patience and an eager mindset...

One Difference

I’m not a soar loser but when a legacy is on the brink of extinction you tend to ask the question what happened, and the answer might be, “One difference.” The Eagles failed to soar during their game against their arch rivals St Josephs College as they lost by a single point (34-35) in the dying minutes of the game. For some, this might go down as the worst defeat of time. However there has been no love loss and we hope that the big boys will do it again this year and win the BISA finals.

The MaP Eagles Care…

Passion!
Servant Hood!
Is there a better fulfilling way to live than to strike a balance between the two?

In this incessantly busy world of ours we are prone to getting entangled in our own lives and shunting the less fortunate. This may have seemed tangential to basketball until hitherto (13 February 2010). It is the philanthropic act of the Maru-a-Pula Basketball Team (The Eagles) to premier a basketball programme for orphans. We christened this infant project of ours The MaP Eagles Care which is analogous to NBA Cares-A philanthropic organization that does charity work world wide. . The eminent Eagles have been National Champions for 16 years running. We found it necessary to impart the basketball acumen that we have amassed over these 16years and the spirit of winning to the orphans at the SOS Children’s Village in Tlokweng. What exactly do we do? Well, every other Saturday we travel to the orphanage and teach children between the ages of 7 and 16 the basic basketball drills of passing, shooting, dribbling etc. This is the initial steps of our programme though we are hoping to be able to build a proper court and provide basket balls for the orphanage in the future. This is how we give back to our community emulating our late legendary coach Silas Mabonga. We hope to see this service grow and become bigger and better over the years as we put our passion (Basketball) and service together. What other way to be basketball champions than striking a balance between the two, passion and service

Shibobo League 2010

This year the Shibobo league started like a house on fire. Twelve teams were in contention (including a staff team) for the coveted price. After three weeks of non stop action, the finals were graced by Pinkitah and the Barbie Bandits on the females’ side, while Konvicts took All stars in the men’s final. Both ties entertained the crowds with exciting ball skills and goals, and in the end, the Barbie Bandits and All Stars won in their respective ties. Special awards were scooped by Waseem Tajbhay and Rachael Kirby for top goal scorer and player of the tournament respectively.

This was not all, intiatives like the new map sports site, the SAC and an active Shibobo committee, where in full support for its success. Some of the small but distinguishing features of this league were the referees cards, lines-man, soccer nets and that it was the first to be played on grass! To top it all off, an after party was held for the Champions, courtesy of the SAC.

In General, the league was well organized and fun, credit to all the stakeholders who were involved. Thank you very much and we are looking forward to the next Shibobo league.

Who are the fittest athletes?

Fitness is a term that refers to five traits: cardiovascular efficiency, muscle to fat ratio, strength, agility and flexibility. The preferred unit of measurement when comparing different athletes’ fitness is ‘VO2 max-the maximum volume of oxygen that one can consume while exercising. Of all sporting codes, cycling boasts the fittest. Lance Armstrong’s VO2 max is 83.8. He also boasts a resting heart rate of 32 beats per minute -compared with 60-70 for the average man-which rises to 201 at full exertion. According to his biographer Dan Coyle, these attributes make him ‘the world’s greatest human power plant’.
As Coyle put it:

“the tour is the hardest event on the planet, nothing comes close. Studies have shown that tour riders spend more daily energy than Everest climbers. During those three weeks they spend energy at a rate that exceeds the capabilities of all but four animal species. Imagine running a marathon a day for 20 days. The food alone is ridiculous: on big days, they eat an equivalent of 28 cheeseburgers.”

Breaking Barriers: Performance Anxiety

Some of the effective ways of overcoming performance anxiety is by being calm and establishing a ‘control room’. Sven Groan Erikson has more…
“Football is fast sport which leads to inner mental pace. So players in pressured situations not being calm enough do the opposite of what is expected of them; names such as Pele, Zidane and Beckham posses this natural ability of inner calm and control. This is simply because of their confidence to resist being controlled by their opponents, mass media and the public. We can build our own control room and run it as the tightest of ships. It would be very crucial to think as follows:

‘In here, I say what goes’
‘I am the master in my room’
‘I am strong in my room’
‘I am secure in my room’
‘I am not bothered by what the opponent does’
‘I control my technique’

Sven on the Real Winners

“ Mental difference decide who the winners are.”

Many of us believe that teams with the most talented players are more destined for success than their counterparts. Sven Groan Erikson says otherwise.
Railo: Do you think it’s the most talented players in football who are the winners in the end?
Erikson: Unfortunately no, talent is a pre-requisite for success. If you look at the top footballers, playing ability among them is even. We can’t train more than we do either! So it’s mental differences which decide who the real winners are.
Sven also believes in athletes of a particular mental set up. He believes in, “great ambition without fear of failing” rather than great ambition with a performance anxiety and a great fear of losing. Read more…

Good luck 2010!

A new year has begun and Map sports would like to wish all athletes competing in different sports codes a successful spell. Last year(2009) saw lady luck smiling at Map as we swooped more than six(6) trophies from different competitions. Clearly we made our mark on the sporting stage. Good luck guys and maintain the good performance.

The Battle of Highbury

The battle of Highbury is undoubtedly a collectors piece for Arsenal football clubs and it’s fans. This was a fiercely contested exhibition match between Italy and England at Highbury (by then Arsenal’s home ground). By then Italy’s vengeful leader Mussolini, had promised the players a brand new Alfa Romeo and a cash bonus, had they defeated England. The incentive did not work; England won 3-2 at the end rubbing salt on the fresh wounds of defeat the Italians had suffered to them during the 1938 world cup.
